Paul Smith Barton, J13606, PO – FO – FL, was a pilot with 439 Squadron for three months during the Second World War. He enlisted 11 August 1941 in Toronto, earning his wings at 14 SFTS in September 1942. Barton flew Lysanders in Canada for 14 months with 123 Sqn and Coastal Artillery Cooperation flights. He was then sent overseas and arrived in the UK in December 1943. He was posted to 439 Sqn January – March 1944. He flew in the first Typhoon cross channel combat ops of the unit. 31 March, posted out of 439. He resurfaced with 400 Sqn on Spitfires on 3 September 1944. Flew with 400 Sqn on Spitfires until 5 August, 1945. Barton earned the DFC.
